Designed for a period home in Dublin, this award-nominated project demonstrates how contemporary kitchen design can enhance the character of a traditional property without compromising its architectural integrity. Rather than recreating a traditional kitchen, the objective was to create a bespoke space that feels timeless, highly functional and completely at home within the original architecture.
Every aspect of the design was developed around the way the family wanted to live. Careful consideration was given to circulation, natural light, storage, entertaining and the relationship between the kitchen and adjoining living spaces. The result is a kitchen that feels effortless to use while complementing the character and proportions of the original home.
The kitchen combines bespoke cabinetry, carefully selected materials and integrated lighting to create a space that is both elegant and highly functional. Every element was designed to contribute to the overall composition, ensuring the kitchen feels visually balanced while supporting the practical demands of modern family life.

Every aspect of the design was carefully considered, from the overall layout and circulation through to cabinetry, lighting, storage and material selection. Clean architectural lines are complemented by bespoke detailing, creating a kitchen that feels refined, welcoming and effortless to live in.
Working independently with the homeowners, Darren Morgan Design developed a bespoke solution that prioritised functionality without compromising aesthetics. Carefully planned preparation areas, intelligent storage and seamless appliance integration ensure the kitchen performs beautifully for family life, entertaining and everyday living.

Kitchen Design of the Year
Designed for a young family in County Derry, this project called for a distinctive contemporary kitchen that could become the architectural heart of the home. The brief was to balance strong visual impact with the practical requirements of everyday family life, creating a space that feels elegant, welcoming and effortless to use.
The flowing furniture arrangement was developed to connect the kitchen, dining and adjoining living areas while allowing each part of the room to retain its own identity. Curved cabinetry, contrasting finishes and carefully balanced proportions give the design a highly individual character, while maintaining clear circulation throughout the open-plan space.
Bespoke cabinetry, integrated lighting and carefully selected materials were used to create continuity across the room. Storage, preparation areas and appliances were incorporated into the overall composition so that the kitchen performs efficiently without allowing functional elements to dominate the design.
Darren Morgan Design also developed a coordinated design approach for the wider home, ensuring that materials, furniture details and architectural features worked together across the interior. This whole-home perspective created a more cohesive result and allowed the kitchen to feel naturally connected to the surrounding spaces.

Kitchen Design of the Year
Designed for a period home in Belfast, this project was developed around the client’s appreciation of Art Deco architecture, craftsmanship and decorative detail. The brief was to create a luxurious contemporary kitchen that reflected the character of the property while remaining practical for modern family life.
Symmetry, strong geometric forms and carefully balanced proportions became central to the design. Bespoke cabinetry, rich materials and distinctive detailing were brought together to create an interior that feels sophisticated and individual without becoming overly themed or decorative.
Natural stone surfaces, integrated lighting and carefully selected finishes add depth and refinement throughout the room. Appliances and storage were incorporated discreetly into the furniture composition, allowing the kitchen to remain visually elegant while performing efficiently as an everyday working space.
The design carefully considers the relationship between the kitchen and the surrounding architecture. Each element was developed to complement the proportions and period character of the home, creating a space that feels established rather than newly imposed.
Recognition as a finalist in the SBID International Design Awards 2019 – Kitchen Design of the Year reflects the creativity, craftsmanship and detailed planning behind the project.
